Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) Over 400 North American bird species migrate at night. Guided in part by constellations, they are "fatally attracted" to artificial light escaping from tall office buildings. Birds either collide with these towers or flutter about the light source until they drop from exhaustion.

Get to Know Program - To address the critical problem of our collective alienation from nature, internationally renowned artist and naturalist Robert Bateman launched the “Get to Know” Writing and Art Contest in British Columbia in 2000. Based on Bateman’s philosophy that “caring for the planet begins with getting to know our neighbors of other species,” the contest is focused on inspiring youth to go outdoors and “get to know” their wild neighbors. What began as a small contest has grown into a wildly successful national competition that has received hundreds of thousands of entries from youth across Canada. The contest is an invitation to young Canadians to connect with nature and discover for themselves the wonder and beauty in their own backyard. In addition to the contest, Get to Know has created a number of other initiatives aimed at getting students out of doors and connecting with their neighbors of other species.
