Migration 2004

Fall Ultralight-Guided Whooping Crane Migration
Wisconsin to Florida

Date: November 18, 2004 |  Day 40

Arrival at the Hiwassee State Wildlife Refuge - Meigs County, TN

The young female Whooping crane, #419 rides the wake of air rolling off the sweet spot of the large delta shaped aircraft wing.
At 9:17 a.m. Richard van Heuvelen appeared first with crane #419 trailing his left wingtip, while just breaking through the light fog was Joe Duff who had thirteen crane-kids following him.
As Joe reduces his altitude some separation in the long line occurs with three cranes staying in formation, and the other ten, sailing high above.
The ten high flyers, with Don and Paula Lounsbury heading in the opposite direction in the background.
Joe leads the flock away from us and towards their enclosure, located on a remote area of the Hiwassee State Wildlife Refuge.
