Migration 2004

Fall Ultralight-Guided Whooping Crane Migration
Wisconsin to Florida

Date: November 17, 2004 |  Day 39

Adair Co., KY to Cumberland County, Tennessee!

Brooke Pennypacker swoops in low to the right of the young cranes and performs an air pick-up as the three crane handlers try to ensure all fourteen "cranelets" are out of the pen and ready to take off. Note the four that haven't yet cleared the gate of the enclosure?
Because these four Whooping cranes were late exiting the pen they did not take off with the rest of their flockmates...
Brooke made a wide sweeping turn to double back and see if he could convince them to join him in flight.
Success! the four tardy birds leap into the air and begin to climb out of the valley with the rest of the flock!
Leaving their pen behind, all fourteen birds follow their mechanical surrogate out of the Adair County, KY valley and begin the 64-mile flight which will take them to their first Tennessee migration stopover.
