Fall Ultralight-Guided Whooping Crane Migration
Wisconsin to Florida
Date: November 16, 2004 | Day 38
Adair County, KY
 |
| During this morning's air pick-up, which was executed by Richard
van Heuvelen all of the cranes were ready and waiting - except for
one straggler (likely #419 who likes to be fashionably late). |
 |
| She caught up to her flockmates rather quickly and assumed her
position at the back of the long flight line. |
 |
| Soon, everybirdy appeared to be suspended in tight formation above
the 19-meter wing of the ultralight, and settled in for the 54-mile
trip from Washington to Adair Counties, Kentucky. |
 |
| Once the birds were delivered to Adair County, the overnight pen
needed to be erected so the pilots walked the cranes out of sight to
frolic in a nearby stream then Joe (left) and Mark Nipper (right)
quickly set up the predator-proof enclosure. |
 |
| Once the pen is ready for the cranes, Mark drives the van out of
sight and Joe throws his costume back on and lets the other pilots
know that the coast is clear. |
 |
|
After a flight time of 1 hour and 33 minutes, followed by an hour of
fun in the stream the young cranes are ready and willing to be led
inside the familiar enclosure...
