Fall Ultralight-Guided Whooping Crane Migration
Wisconsin to Florida
Date: October 21, 2004
Day Twelve - Winnebago County, ILLINOIS
| Vicky Trabold and Mark Nipper head to the crane pen to get ready
to release the cranes. |
| Richard van Heuvelen picks up the cranes for the third time in
Green County, Wisconsin. Seven cranes follow his flight path out and
try to catch up to him... |
| Here, two of the remaining seven that took a shortcut out of the
field, fly over our heads and soon catch him. |
| Brooke passes overhead in pursuit, ready to pick up any dropouts.
Once you know their call letters it's easy to identify them in
flight. Brooke's craft is "Charlie - India - Alpha - Charlie -
Papa" |
While Joe's trike is "Charlie - India - Alpha - Kilo -
Quebec" And he also has a Northsails logo on his right wingtip,
making it easier for our top-cover pilots to spot him.
Since the pilots and cranes landed short in Winnebago County they had
to entertain the birds until the pen crew arrived to set up the
enclosure. Here Richard and Joe keep them busy as they wait for Brooke
to arrive with the final crane.
Brooke nurses in crane #402 after it dropped out, landing 3 miles
short of target. After a brief rest they were both airborne again and
arrived 9 minutes after the main group.

People often wonder what the team does during the Stand Down days -
The above woodpile is the result of one down day in Green County...
