Migration 2004

Fall Ultralight-Guided Whooping Crane Migration
Wisconsin to Florida

Start Date: October 10, 2004

Day One

Pilots Joe Duff and Brooke Pennypacker fly their Cosmos Phase II aircraft over the crowd on the way to the East Site at 8:43 am on Oct. 10th.
A large crowd arrives in more than fifty vehicles to catch a final glimpse of the young Whooping cranes and to bid them farewell until next spring when they will return as yearlings, complete with their adult plumage.
Richard van Heuvelen passes by first with two birds.
Next Joe Duff passes over with six young cranes.
Arriving at the first of many stopover locations between WI and FL is Brooke Pennypacker with #417 surfing the air vortices created as the wing of the aircraft moves through the cool morning air.
