March 11, 2009 - St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge |
| Bev finally has her computer and camera issues solved and is now able to share some much anticipated photos of the Class of 2008 at their winter pen site on the St. Marks NWR. My oh my, look how they've changed! Number 829 shows us how his adult markings are quickly filling in. Notice his red skin patch emerging on his head? and the black moustache is actually very tiny black feathers, which will continue to grow in until completely black. This young male came from the Calgary Zoo in Alberta and his hatch date was June 13, 2008 - making him one of the youngest member of his class. |
| Crane 813 is a female, also from the Calgary Zoo's captive breeding program. She hatched out on May 23, 2008. This makes her just three weeks older than #829 above but look at how dark her moustache is already. |
| One of the cranes forages for, and finds a Blue crab! |
| As the full moon rises in the eastern sky, number 813 spends some more time foraging for tasty treats before settling in to roost on the oyster bar. |
