Costumed handlers assist Dr. Barry Hartup as he carries out a
thorough physical examination to ensure the growing cranes are
healthy.
Each crane is fitted with a hood that covers their eyes and
reduces the stress. Wings are examined to see if important primary
feathers are growing properly.
At the conclusion of the examination each crane is fitted with a
temporary radio telemetry transmitter, which will allow us to track
their whereabouts during the southward migration should they become
separated from the flock.
