The costumed handler and puppet spends time with number 811 before
the four and a half month old Whooping crane was moved to the
Milwaukee Zoo.
Another close-up of 811. In this photo you can see the slight bend
to the end of her beak, which was injured in an altercation with her
brother, #810 shortly after being transferred from Patuxent to
Necedah.
Male crane chick, #814 shows us his bright blue eyes. This chick
came from an egg provided by the Audubon Center for the Research of
Endangered Species (ACRES) in New Orleans.
In a few short months, 814 will lose all cinnamon coloring in his
feathers and his blue eyes will turn a vibrant yellow, much like the
legband he's wearing.
