January 23, 2009 - Marion Co., to Citrus Co., Chassahowitzka NWR

As Bev and I made the long walk out to the Halpata pensite, I realized this would be the last time I'd see the crane-kids, as kids. With luck, I'll get to see them this summer, as adults, after they've returned north.
Off they go, while Chris Gullikson begins taxiing for take off. Normally as soon as they're released we have to run into the travel pen trailer and hide so they won't be tempted to return. Today though, I stood watching them as they lifted off the ground.
As I was watching them I saw one fluffy white feather fall from one of them and flutter slowly to the ground.
Soon it was time to gather the feed buckets and hang up the airhead and radio for another season.
Chris leads the Chass seven over Marion and Citrus Counties on their final flight with the aircraft.

This is their new winter home on the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge in Citrus County, Florida...
