January 22, 2009 - Dunnellon Arrival Flyover

A small crowd of 200 or so braved the chilly temperatures this morning, waiting to see the Chassahowitzka cohort of seven members of the Class of 2008.
The pilots and cranes came into view just after 9am. Brooke Pennypacker was today's lead pilot and he had seven obedient birds trailing off his left wingtip while Joe flew first chase and Richard enjoyed the view from Brooke's 7 o'clock position. Chris Gullikson was further to the left and out of frame.
Joe captured this image from earlier on in the flight. At this point Brooke had two of the right and the other five off his left wingtip.
I captured the beautiful sight from below-on the tarmac at the Dunnellon-Marion County Airport.
Brooke and his crane kids fly past the waiting crowd on their way to the Halpata Tastanaki Preserve Pen site. If the weather holds for us tomorrow we'll fly the cranes the remaining 26 miles to their winter pen located 5 miles off the coast in a closed-to-the-public area of the refuge.
