When the temperature and dew point are the same number it produces a
thick blanket of fog. When that number is below the freezing point
it also creates frost. In anticipation of the frost the pilots had
placed their frost covers over their wings late yesterday.
The pilots had extra time to ready their trikes this morning while
they waited for the fog to burn off. Above Brooke Pennypacker makes
last minute adjustments.
With still a slight ground fog visible Brooke is airborne.
Today's lead pilot Joe Duff passes by with all fourteen cranes forming
up nicely on his wing
Another pass as they begin to fall into place behind Joe's trike.
Chris Gullikson was number 827's chauffeur today. Lately this bird has
been flying with the others but for some reason today he reverted to
his former ways and wanted his very own trike.
While the pilots were in the air herding the cranes, the ground crew
was on the ground herding cattle. As the travel pen is towed out of
the field in front of us, the cattle quickly got in our way and were
quite reluctant to moooove out of the way.
