December 29, 2008 - Day 63 - Southward Migration Resumes!

Ms. Swamp Monster (aka Heather) captured this image this morning from the pond she was trying to deter the crane-kids from landing in. Lead pilot, Brooke Pennypacker launched at 7:17am (CST) with all fourteen cranes following behind. After a 30 minute game of crane round-up, Brooke was finally able to convince the flock that they had spent more than enough time in Franklin County, AL and began leading them south.
Not too far out, 7 birds decided to break away from Brooke and joined Richard van Heuvelen, today's 1st chase pilot. Richard captured this shot, which puts number our youngest chick, number 830 in the lead position!
Richard also captured this photo of thirteen of the birds on final approach at our Walker County, Alabama location.
All of the birds tucked away in their travel pen; resting after today's 53 mile flight.
