December 12, 2008

What's that old adage? Red sky at night; crane flyers delight. This was the sunset that greeted us on Thursday evening at Horse Creek Wildlife Sanctuary after it poured rain for two days.
Walter captured the above photo from the public viewing location. Richard is guiding 13 cranes (two are obscured by the wing) away from the pensite that was submerged in 6 inches of water after all the rain. I'm pretty sure that at this point Bev and I were still trying to corral number 827 out of the pen so that Joe could swoop in and pick him up on his aircraft.
Richard birds making the first of many breaks away from his aircraft.
The cranes go AWOL
Joe captured number 827 as he flew alongside him over the snow covered terrain of Alabama.
Richard leads the flock on the ground. That's 827 on the left - Notice how brown he still is compared to the slightly older and whiter birds?
