December 5, 2008

Chris Gullikson leads 13 Whooping cranes out of Marshall County, KY on the eleventh fly day of the 2008 migration.
They managed to climb to over 3000 ft. altitude as they crossed the Tennessee River north of Savannah, TN. Notice how the lead bird is flying with its legs tucked up to its chest to keep them warm in the frigid 13 degree air temperature. If you look slightly above the last bird in the long line, you can see one of the other ultralights off in the distance.
Approaching our one and only Tennessee stopover of 2008, Chris still has all 13 birds.
Once on the ground Brooke and Joe keep the birds occupied while they wait for Brian Clauss to arrive with the travel pen.

There was a small stream nearby which helped to keep the birds busy.
