Pumpkins and other enrichment items help to alleviate boredom when
the cranes are grounded for an extended period of time. Here crane
829 has claimed his piece of the pumpkin and is pecking away at the
tasty treat.
Chick 810 shows off his lovely wings and new leg jewelry prior to
his one-by-one release on Oct. 22nd.
Note the difference between 810 color-coded bands and the
legband/radio transmitter on #829 above. 810's radio transmitter is
on his left leg and is a Red over White combination. All of the 2008
hatch year cranes will eventually wear this same color-coded
transmitter on their left leg.
Just before dusk on Oct. 22nd, #810 was crated and transported a
short distance to West Rynearson Pond on the Necedah refuge where he
was released. Details to follow in the
Field Journal as soon as we have news.
